Description: Durham's most ambitious effort of writing is possibly this book. It is the product of her longest stay in the Balkans - three and a half years from April 1910 to September 1913 (primarily in Montenegro and Albania). The border issue is addressed in “The Struggle for Scutari” (original title), followed by the brutal war undertaken by the tiny Kingdom of Montenegro under King Nikola against a collapsing Ottoman Empire, of which Albania was still a part. The Albanian highland tribes Edith Durham knew and loved were caught in the center of the struggle, in a tough situation.
